CIC Walk Sunday 4th Nov. 2007: Jorunn Solheim & Hans Saetrevik

The walk is a circular route from Moundros, a small village south of Roustika. We leave Moundros then walk through the Moundros Gorge towards Velonado – a small inland village. From there we will walk over the ridge where there is a good view inland and towards the sea in the north. Coming down from the ridge we meet an “agrotiki” road which leads us back to Moundros. Along the road we will be able to look down into the Poros Gorge northern end; we will also visit a chapel with a beautiful view over the area and an abandoned village.
Meeting point: 09.15 am at the turn off on the new National road signposted to Episkopi. Coming from Hania the turn is 3.5 km beyond the petrol station at Kavros. From Rethymno the turn is 10 km from Rethymno. Leaving 09.30 am for Moundros, about half an hour driving.
Distance/time: About 8,5 km, 3-4 hours, and total 270 m ascent/descent.
Walk Grade: Moderate walking in the gorge and up the ridge, but a lot of small stones, sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The “agrotiki” road gives us easy walking down the ridge. The Moundros Gorge is easier than the Poros Gorge we walked in autumn 2006.
Cost: €2 euro per person will be used to help an animal charity in Rethymnon (larger contributions will of course be gratefully received).
Lunch: Picnic with your own food. After the walk we can make a stop in a taverna in Roustika or Ag.Konstantinos (pay as you go) on the way back from Moundros.
Booking: Jorunn Solheim / Hans Saetrevik on 6939159737 /6936484156, or e-mail: jorusol@start.no, by 18.00 Friday 2nd Nov. Please leave a contact number so that we can let you know of any change in arrangements.
Conditions for walks: Non-members are welcome but will need to be booked in by a member and accompanied by that member on the walk. Sturdy walking shoes and a walking stick are recommended for all walks. Bring adequate/appropriate clothing just in case and plenty of water.
See Limitation of Liability at the bottom of page 2 in the CIC News.
