This Month
Special Days for Rethymnon |
Rethymnon commemorates the siege at Arkadi Monastery between 7th and 9th November 1866. You can read more about the events that took place and their historical significance on our Spotlight page. The 8th and 9th of November are holidays in Rethymnon — many shops and public offices will be closed. Generally a number of events are planned —including a parade through town, special church services and the Arkadi fun-run. As ever, we will post more details as and when we get them on the
www.rethymnon.biz website.
Many UK and Commonwealth readers will be marking 11th November: this is Armistice Day (end of WWI in 1918); a remembrance service will be held at the Commonwealth war graves at Souda Bay.
For those Bugle readers who are wondering what to do here during the winter months, worry not! Although summer beach parties are no longer an option and the souvenir shops have closed for the season, there is still plenty to do here in Rethymnon. In fact, when we were compiling events for this month’s Bugle, we found that there were just too many to fit on just one page.
On our Winter Fun Page you will see that locals are bending over backwards to make sure we won’t get bored. Live music, wine tasting, fun Greek lessons, quiz nights, —these are just a few of the activities that have been lined up for November.
Looking further ahead, it’s time to think about regional Christmas Charity Bazaars — Friends of Animals will be holding their annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 1st December, the CIC Christmas Bazaar will take place on Saturday 8th December and Sunday 9th December in Hania. You can find out more about these events along with other local activities on our Community Pages. |
Guy Fawkes
|
“Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, the gunpowder, treason and plot”. Or so the poem goes. For our non-British readers this may seem like total gibberish, so a bit of explanation is necessary. On 5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes and a few Roman Catholic colleagues attempted to blow up the House of Lords. However, details of the plot were leaked, and the conspirators were arrested and executed for treason. The English celebrate this failure every year as ’Bonfire Night’ - many people hosting outdoor parties with firework displays, burning an effigy of ‘Guy’ on a large fire.
Traditional food on this occasion? Toasted marshmallows, sausages, and jacket potatoes (what else)? A cynical phrase associated with Guy Fawkes is that he was ‘the only man to ever enter parliament with honourable intentions’. So what is the Rethymnon connection? Well none, really. But worth mentioning anyway—if nothing else it may give some of our readers additional insight into English eccentricity!

Bugle Team go ‘Walkabout’ |
The Bugle team will be leaving the island for two weeks in November — between the 3rd and the 17th. We’re not going as far as Australia, but will be visiting Athens, Belgium and the UK (look out for a travel section in the December issue!). We’ll be checking our emails on a regular basis, but obviously won’t be taking landline calls (messages can still be left on our answer machine). So, please understand if it takes a while for us to respond to a query during that time. But don’t let this put you off from getting in touch — if you know of an event in the Rethymnon region that you would like to see publicised in The Bugle, tell us about it. You will find our contact details on the Community Page.
And, keep those competition entries coming in (the picture of the kangaroo isn’t one of them, by the way)! Funny road signs, strange billboards and menu howlers are all welcome. We’ve received a couple of real gems so far, and hope to start publishing a selection in December. Ruth Swan will kindly be judging the competition via ‘e-link’ from Italy in 2008.
