Live Music at The Caribbean
November
sees the start of the ‘Winter Live Music Season’ in local bars and tavernas
(during the summer, with doors and windows flung wide open, live music evenings
in Rethymnon are less feasible). The Caribbean, by the Rimondi Fountain, has
been a well-known venue for many years. In November, there will be live music on
Friday and Saturday evenings: Piano, guitar, bouzouki and two singers; style of
music will include ’entecno’, ‘elafro laïka’ and ‘laïka’. Later in the winter
there will be jazz / rock on Thursday nights, and a number of different bands
will play on special evenings—some famous Greek names are currently being lined
up. The Caribbean will be serving hot and cold mezes, a variety of main courses
and a selection of local organic wines. Music starts at 23:00.
Laina and Wendy: Acropolis

New Rethymnon Wine Tasting Society for Bugle Readers:
Partly as a result of our piece about wine production in the October Bugle, Anna Capernaros has generously come up with the idea to start a wine appreciation society for Bugle readers and friends. She writes the following:
“The Bugle
article set me thinking that it was time to set up a club for all those interested in bibulous pursuits. So having had this idea I have taken some initial steps to produce some ideas for a sort of winter programme. Firstly – these are my ideas for the charter of the Society: To research local Cretan and Greek producers of wines and spirits in order to extend our knowledge and educate our tastebuds beyond the very often excellent “village wines”. To have fun sampling these products in good company accompanied by local gastronomic delicacies. To support local producers, thereby increasing the range and demand for wines and other alcoholic beverages beyond the ranges offered in local supermarkets. These activities will only take place during the winter months – to cheer us all up (and giving livers a break in the summer?). How will this be organised?? Well I have fallen on my sword or rather wine glass – and as this is my idea I will organize outings – hopefully with input from other readers. Basically I envisage two types of activity :
A/ Outings to local producers to see production in situ – with tastings and lunch etc:
I have spoken to two local producers and we can arrange to visit them whenever convenient – these are: Braoudakis – this is the producer I am sure known to many of us – situated on the road leading to Vrisses from the National Road.
They produce wine, also raki, olive oil etc. and have facilities to accommodate groups with talks in english etc. I asked them about a visit during Raki production – they expect to start early November – so we could organize a visit then. Dourakis – at Alikampos – this is a wine producer I have visited with a CIC excursion organized by Debra – it was very interesting and the lunch was memorable. We can arrange to visit any time it suits us. I have in mind a visit to Boutaris and Minos – also there are some interesting producers in Kissamos- in the new year – but for this we would need to organize transport – more in next month’s Bugle.
B/ Wine tastings where the producers bring their wares to us.
For this activity Wendy and Laina are going to take on the tastings at their new winter venue, Acropolis. At the first wine tasting, on Saturday November 24th. we will be able to sample Manolis Kalomenopoulos’ wine (as described in the October Bugle).
Please send me your ideas – any producers you know and would like to introduce …All suggestions are welcome ….Interested parties should give me their names and email addresses and or mobile nrs so text messages can be sent for those without email – plus of course events will be posted on www.rethymnon.biz website. At the coffee morning let’s fix dates for the two outings mentioned above.”
